Geneva offers so many choices for individual outings that can be undertaken both cheaply and efficiently. The booklet "101 Ideas or Geneva at Hand" –published by the Geneva Tourist Office– will be included in the participant's bag, together with a list of restaurants in the Pâquis area (immediate vicinity of hotels and conference venue) that will be compiled by local students.

A few suggestions:

  • A trip up the Salève mountain provides a stunning view over the lake and only takes an hour or two. The ascent is by cable car and costs about CHF 20. While you're up there, you could take a hike along the well-marked botanical paths, or have a meal with a view.
  • A steamboat ride on the lake. Choose the length of your trip –for an hour to a day. One of the most extensive collections of European steamboats debark from right in front of the conference venue.
  • The Red Cross Museum, the United Nations European Headquarters, are both within a short bus ride from the conference venue. They have conducted tours in several languages, and both institutions let you know that you are at the diplomatic centre of the world.
  • Museums are numerous in the City of Geneva (there are about two dozen). Traditional or eclectic, there is something for everyone.
  • The Botanical Gardens, the Rose Garden and the Alpine Garden. If botany is your thing, then these three gardens will delight you with their superb collections.
  • The Sardinian town of Carouge is now part of Geneva. Hop on the tram and take a look at its unique architecture, and browse in its avant-garde boutiques.
  • Go for a swim. If the weather's good, the Plage de Genève (Geneva Beach) is just the ticket across the harbour from the conference venue. In town, a two-minute walk from the Noga Hilton Hotel is the veritable Bains des Pâquis (Pâquis Baths).
